  1. Roman Britain 119 items
The references in this section are key to the first part of the module
    1. There are over 100 items listed in this reading list and it still does not represent a complete list of the Roman books in the library. This list should be your starting point only and I expect you to find and use sources not on it. The list is divided into a number of sections.

Core journals are the main journals you should look in for articles. Journal articles should always be your first thought when writing essays and revising.

Core Books are good starting points for further reading, essays and revision. These should represent the start not the end of your reading

Electronic resources are good sites for further information or Roman-British datasets.

Then books are listed thematically in a rough aligned with the lecture themes. Again these books represent the starting point for your reading on these themes. Pay particular attention to excavation reports, using excavation reports in essays/revision means your adding detail which general results in better marks!

One point to note is Roman archaeology books are spread across the Library. Most are in the 936-942 dewey decimal  range, in either the main area of the oversized books area. But have 'weird' dewey decimal numbers. For example Roman mosaics is listed under 739, Eating and Drinking in the Roman world is 394 & the excellent People and Spaces in Roman military bases is in 355.

      1. Britannia

        Journal Core For 2010 onwards

      2. Britannia

        Journal Core For 2010 backwards

      3. TRAC Proceedings

Webpage Core Technically not a journal the annual publication of the Theoretical Roman Archaeology Conference. 1991 to 2008 are open access online. 2008 onwards are in the library

    3. Core books on Roman Britain 9 items
      1. The Romanization of Britain: an essay in archaeological interpretation - Martin Millett 1990

Book Core Probably the best (and first) attempt to look at Roman Britain from an archaeological perspective, rather than primarily from an historical one

      2. Roman Britain: a new history - De la Bédoyère, Guy 2013

Book Core A good read, synthesises and integrates the history and archaeology of Roman Britain, with a good balance of detailed, site-specific examples and more general historical interpretation. Good biblography.

      3. An imperial possession: Britain in the Roman Empire, 54 BC-AD 409 - David Mattingly 2007

Book Core A good read but can be hard going in places. It is however a very imporant book that discusses and rejects the more classical concpet of Romanisation.

      4. Companion to Roman Britain - Guy de la Bédoyère 1999

Book Core Cites a significant number of primary historical sources, texts from monumental inscriptions and coins. It can be a little difficult to begin with but adds breadth

      5. The ruin of Roman Britain: an archaeological perspective - Gerrard, James 2013

Book Core The most up to date book that considers the reason for the end of Roman Britain. Some of the ideas are controversial but well argued.

      6. A companion to Roman Britain - Malcolm Todd 2004 (electronic resource)

Book Core The chapters can be variable but all offer a good starting point for many different topics

      7. My Roman Britain - Richard Reece c1988

Book Core My favourite book on Roman Britan mainly due to its wonderful irreverent tone. The library have sourced copies but it’s now out of print so if you see it snap it up. It’s not widely referenced as it annoyed a lot of people

      8. A history of Roman Britain - Peter Salway 2001

Book Core Written primarily from the known historical sources and therefore provides a fair starting point for these, the archaeology is not covered in great detail

      9. The recovery of Roman Britain 1586-1906: a colony so fertile - Richard Hingley 2008

Book Core A good back ground to the development of Roman Archaeology in Britain. In particular how Romans were accommodated in narratives of Britishness.
